Banded tulip seaShell Facts

The Banded Tulip seashell (Fasciolaria lilium) is one of the more brittle seashells and is rarely found whole and intact by seashell collectors after being washed onto the beach.
The Banded Tulip seashell grows to an average of 2¼-4⅛" in length. The habitat range of Banded Tulip shells is from the Dry Tortugas, Florida and Louisiana to Texas and Yucatan, Mexico. The Banded Tulip shell prefers living on a sandy to muddy sand bottom. Banded Tulip shells can usually be found in waters from 2 to 150 feet in depth.

Florida Banded Tulip Shell
The Florida Banded Tulip shell (Fasciolaria lilium hunteria) is a closely related species which is sometimes classified as a distintly separate species (Fasciolaria hunteria) from the ordinary Banded Tulip shells.
The Florida Banded Tulip seashell is usually smaller in length and broader than it's more common Tulip shell cousins. The Florida Banded Tulip is found from North Carolina to Florida and Alabama.

Although the Banded Tulip is a smooth and delicate looking shell, looks can be deceiving.
The Banded Tulip is among the most aggressive and cannibalistic of all the shells living of the coasts of Florida. When picked up, a live Banded Tulip will thrust out its foot and violently thrash about in an attempt to get free. Although the Banded Tulip seashell will eat just about any kind of mollusk, its favorite dish is fresh clams.
