SHELLING VACATIONS

 

Ocracoke Island, N.C.
This island is one of the barrier islands of North Carolina's outer banks.
About 16 miles long, Ocracoke Island offers a wide variety of shells.  The most common to be found are Lettered Olives, Scotch Bonnets, Calico Scallops and various Whelks.
Shelling at low tide on a leisurely stroll along the water's edge are productive and relaxing.  Many beach access points have ample parking and walking 2-3 miles down the beach will be rewarded with secluded areas.  Some areas allow for vehicles to travel on the beach but 4-wheel drive is highly recommended.
Ocracoke Village is a quaint town of about 700 permanent residents.  There one can walk to unique shops, the lighthouse, the wharf, various stores and nice restaurants.  Don't miss the wild pony pasture.

 

Sanibel Island, Florida

Located about 20 miles west of Ft. Meyers, Sanibel is generally considered to be among the five best shelling areas in the world. Large mounds of shells and great variety are found.

The best shelling beaches are along East Gulf and Middle Gulf Drives and at Blind Pass. The best months are December - February at low tides. Shells are bountiful after storms.

Beautiful resorts and fine restaurants spot the island. Accommodations are a bit pricey, but values can be found 1/2 hour away in Ft. Meyers.
A pleasant side-trip to Lovers Key provides nice shelling and almost deserted beaches. Just south of Ft. Meyers Beach, Lovers Key has picnic tables and a snack bar.
